CURRENT
I am consulting on a full-time basis on the Universal
Studios Theme Park in Singapore.
2006-2007
Universal Studios/CITYWALK - Creative Director
Frankenstein
Valet
I developed two
Concepts for the new Frankenstein Valet at USH. One
Concept was called ‘Hi-Tech Frankenstein’ and the other
Concept was ‘The Red Carpet Treatment’ inspired by Oscar
Gowns. The ‘Red Carpet Treatment’ design was
built in May 2007. I drew the Concept Sketches and worked with
an Architecture Firm to develop the drawing package. I
chose all of the materials, finishes, fixtures and
furnishings.
‘Shrek
Shack’
I designed a Shrek-themed
Castle over an existing facility at USH with a very
limited budget. This new edition created a Gateway for
the Shiek Attraction and established a critical mass for
the Land. I also facilitated the Field Art Direction.
This Project was built in December of 2006.
HOLLYWOOD
Photo Land/New York Street Image Capture
I designed these
two Image-Capture Facilities in the Theme Park. The New
York Street Image Capture was an Interior Design Project
which fit into an existing 1940’s ‘Little Italy’ Façade.
I drew the Concept Sketch and our Design Director worked
with an Architecture Firm which completed the Drawing
Package. I created the name ‘Hollywood PhotoLand’ and
worked with a Graphic Designer on the main Entry Sign.
I also worked with a Landscape Architect on the Area
Development and Landscape. Hollywood Photoland was a
re-model of an existing Facility – Both Projects are
built.
‘Facelifting’
Projects at CITYWALK/Universal Studios
I was responsible
for many small ‘Facelifting’ Projects in both CITYWALK
and in Universal Studios; including new paving, building
colors, tables, chairs, umbrellas, Restaurant
countertops, fixtures and furnishings. I interfaced with
a broad range of Vendors on these projects.
Projects I directed
at CITYWALK/Universal Studios
Studio Tour Tram
Sussman Prejza, an
Environmental Design Firm in Los Angeles, partnered
with USH to develop a new Signage and Identity system
for the Studio Tour Tram in the Theme Park. I was the
Creative Liaison between the Designer and the USH Team.
PlaceMaking
Enhancements
I worked
extensively with LADA Inc., a Landscape Architecture
Firm in Venice, to develop a Program for new site
furniture in CITYWALK, including Planters, Mosaic Tile
Pots and Fountain Wall Enhancements. I also worked with
several outside Artists and coordinated projects for
‘Artisan’ Handrails, Paving and a Sculpture Program in
CITYWALK.
ParkWide Furniture
Program
I was asked to
coordinate a ParkWide Furniture Procurement Program for
Universal Studios Theme Park. I made selections for
Chairs, Tables and Umbrellas and also found Artisans who
design and fabricate custom Tables and Chairs.

WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING
Tomorrowland
I designed a line
of guest-interactive Robots to animate and energize the
Tomorrowlands in the Disney Theme Parks. The inspiration
for the design of the Robots was taken from 1950’s
television shows but the Robots were equipped with the
newest technologies. Some of the ideas included Robot
Comedians, Robot Musicians, The Happiest Robot Family in
the Happiest Place on Earth, Tired Tourist Bots, Robot
Photographer, Pop-Corn Maker, Resting Robot, and
P.A.L.S. (Positive, Always Loving Supporters) who make
nice, positive comments to the guests.
Nemo's Water
PlayHouse
This was a Blue Sky
Proposal inspired by the film, Finding Nemo, and was
intended as two attractions in one. During the warm
season, this attraction is full of water effects and
Guests would get really wet! During the cooler months,
special effects are substituted for the water effects
and Guests are “Virtually” soaked. Some of the
interactive games include; Walk this Ray, Yikes! SHARKS,
Black Light Barracuda, Dory’s Maze, Anchors Away,
Circular Dude, BlowOut, and Tiki Mirror Maze.
Pooh
E's
Hum Dinger Day,
Pooh-Dah-Do-Dah Day and Blustery Day were Blue Sky
Proposals for Walt Disney World based on Pooh and his
cast of Characters. Hum-Dinger Day is a two-part ride; a
state-of-the-art 3-D experience through Pooh’s, Rabbits
and Piglet’s houses’ combined with a kiddie coaster ride
through the 100 Acre Wood. Pooh-Dah-Do-Dah Day is a
hot-air ride combined with a boat ride through the 100
Acre Wood. Blustery Day is a water ride with umbrellas
and guests go through Piglet’s Whirlpool, Eeyore’s
RainBurst, Tigger’s Echo Tree Trunk and over Tigger
Rapids.
Disney
Cruise Ship
A colleague and I
traveled to Cape Canaveral to participate in a
"Blue-Sky" session for this 3rd Cruise Ship. I was
responsible for designing the Nursery for children ages
3 months to 4 years. I used Disney’s baby Einstein
characters for the inspiration and developed a play
environment called "Babes in the Woods". The design was
approved by Disney Corporate and will be implemented
when the third Cruise Ship is built.
Baby
Einstein
3-teething Ring
Circus and Squeaky Clean Baby Wash - I developed
conceptual ideas for interactive and environmental play
for children based on Disney’s baby Einstein characters.
These venues would be located in Disney's Magic
Kingdoms.
Shanghai, China
I was part of a
Concept Team developed ideas for a major new Disney
Resort in Shanghai, China. The build-out of this project
will include up to three Theme Parks, five Hotels, Golf
courses, and an Entertainment and Dining Complex similar
to “Downtown Disney” at Disney’s California Adventure in
Anaheim.

Tokyo Disneyland -
The Clown Ship
I developed ideas
for area-development Interactives for this proposed new
addition to Tokyo Disneyland. Some ideas included: Water
Balloon Breaks, Something’s Fishy off the Pier, Clowning
Around, Obnoxious Clowns, Plug the Leaky ‘Trunk”, Seal
Spin, Foot-long Hot Dog Rides and Buoy oh Buoy!
Seoul,
Korea
This is an on-going
project at Imagineering. I developed a conceptual site
layout for this new Theme Park in Seoul, Korea. The
intent of this Theme Park is to focus more on the “Park”
part and develop a series of venues for live
entertainment, dining and shopping.
Imagineer
That!
Imagineer That! is
a Disney Channel sponsored program which teaches
children how to be creative. I was the WDI
representative who accompanied the Channel to five
schools throughout America to talk about the creative
process at Imagineering. After the Program, Children
write a 200 word essay on how creativity helps them in
school. The winner receives a free trip for 4 to
Disneyland plus a behind-the-scenes tour of
Imagineering.
ABC Extreme
Makeover – Home Edition
Myself and Lynne
Itamura, a Senior Interior Designer, were picked to
design an 11 year-old girls’ room for this ABC program.
We chose all of the furniture, furnishings, lighting,
decorations and lots of Disney “found art’. The
construction schedule was very compressed – the house
was completely remodeled in 5 days, and that included
adding a second story!
Toy Story Miniature
Golf
I proposed two
different concepts for creating a Miniature Golf course
based on Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story film, Putt Your Toys
Away and Andy’s Birthday Par-Tee. A portion of each of
the courses would be played in black light. Some of the
courses included; Nervous Rex, “I Fall to Pieces” hosted
by Mr. Potato Head, Slippery Snake Slope, Hamm and
Cheese, “I Put a Spell on You” hosted by Mr. Spell,
Virtual Vomit, Whack a Mole, Bo Peep Bad Sheep, Roving
Robot and Nothing gets past an Army Man.
Water Park at
Disney’s California Adventure
A colleague and I
generated ideas for a Water Park in Disney’s California
Adventure in Anaheim. Some of the ideas included: Boom
Box Blasters - Wave Machine, California Crazy Water
Park, Teen Scream Water Park, Venice Beach Bash, I’m
Melting! I’m Melting! Catch Some Rays, and So Cal Pool
Party.
Children’s
Playgrounds at Disneyland
These ideas
targeted the age group from 3 – 5 years old. All of the
designs could be incorporated into all Disney Theme
Parks. Some of the ideas included: Toon Town Tub
Fountain, Pooh’s One Acre Wood, Nemo and Dory’s Stroller
Carousel, Alice’s Enchanted Garden, Kermit’s Playground
at Muppet Studios and Nemo and Friend’s Water
Playground.

Pooh U
Pooh U is an idea
for a line of interactive Videos/DVD’s intended for
children 3 to 9 years old. The purpose of Pooh U is to
teach civility, common courtesy and everyday manners
using the Pooh Characters. The classes include Pooh’s
Social Responsibility, Owl’s Academics, Personal Habits
taught by Rabbit, Fun and Games taught by Tigger, Family
Time with Kanga and Roo, the Arts are taught by Piglet
and Christopher Robin is the Host.
Pooh
Exercise U
I developed ideas
for a line of interactive videos/DVDs to address the
challenge of obesity in America’s children. Pooh is the
exercise leader, Tigger teaches exercise games, Kanga
and Roo teach Family exercise, Rabbit leads high-energy
aerobics, Piglet’s Clean Sweep is an interactive
cleaning sing-a-long and Eeyore is in charge of slow
warm-ups.
Farm
Bureau Touch Screen Interactive
The purpose of this
project was to teach children about all of the products
which come from the Farm. I proposed three different
concepts for this interactive touch screen which is part
of the Innoventions attraction at EPCOT in Walt Disney
World. The first concept “Hide ‘n’ Grow Seek” and was
hosted by a character named “Sprout.” The second
concept was called “Happy Home” - The home is happy
because it is full of products from the Farm. The third
concept was “Surprise Party” - The surprise being all of
the products that come from the Farm.
Dasani
This Corporate
Sponsor asked Imagineering to come up with ideas on how
they could be represented in the Disney Theme Parks.
Dasani, which is owned by Coco-Cola, was especially
interested in interactive fountains. I presented
alternatives based on California lifestyles; including,
the “Surfer Dude” fountain, the “Extreme Sports”
fountain, and the “Hollywood Starlet” fountain.
Disney’s California
Adventure New Year’s Party
We conducted
brainstorming sessions to come with ideas for the 2003
New Year’s Celebration. I developed ideas for a New
Year’s Bash based on the character, Stitch, From the
Disney animated film, Lilo and Stitch. Some other ideas
I proposed included putting a New Year’s hat on Grizzly
Mountain with a Noisemaker, installing a Busby Berkeley
inspired “Champagne Walk” on Hollywood Boulevard
complete with popping champagne corks and champagne
“soap” bubbles.
Mickey’s
State Fair
This project was
proposed as an addition to the Golden State area of
Disney’s California Adventure. The idea was to design a
year-round State Fair which combined lo-tech
interactives and games using the Big Five – Mickey,
Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto. Some of the ideas
included: Goofy’s Waterworks, Minnie’s Cake Baking
Contest, Donald’s Incredible Piano Playing Rooster,
Goofy’s Solar-powered Flyswater, Pluto’s Chicken-laying
Egg Pachinko Game and Mickey’s Cow Milking Machine.
FastPass
I designed a line
of products which would be used in conjunction with
Disney’s FastPass at the Theme Parks. FastPass is a
ticketing reservation system which allows guests to
access attractions through a separate dedicated entry.

WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING
Goofy’s
Guide
I produced ideas
for a software project called, Goofy’s Guide, which was
based on ATT’s 1-800-TellMe Software. Guests would use
their Cell Phones to access this system and the purpose
was to provide entertainment but also offered
information. The ideas included Message Control, Disney
after Dark, Hold Please! Audio Treasure Map, Teach Me:
Translator, Teach Me: Goofy, Cellar Speller, Happy Days,
K DIS, and Baby Sitter.
McDonald’s Happy
Meals
I was one of two
team members who generated ideas for toys in McDonald’s
Happy Meal Boxes. The toys were inspired by attractions
at Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim. We also
generated ideas for the McDonald’s "Drive-up"
Experience.
TDS Expansion
I was the principal
Concept Landscape Architect for the first expansion to
Tokyo Disney Seas (TDS) in Tokyo, Japan. My
responsibilities included developing themed environments
which supported the two proposed attractions, Manhattan
Motor Mania and Cops and Robbers.
EPCOT World Garden
A colleague and I
were the Concept Designers for a proposed World-Class
garden at EPCOT in Orlando called The EPCOT World
Garden. I proposed ideas to present landscape and
gardens in entertaining, educational and interactive
ways. I also proposed a series of large-scale
interactive fountains; including a Spouting Whale
fountain, a Manta Ray Mosh Pit, a ‘World’ fountain, a
Big School of Fish fountain, The Seas Water playground
and an Octpi fountain.
Millennium
Village
Walt Disney World –
I was the Art Director for the props for the "Gifts to
the World" Welcome Center in Millennium Village. This
project showcased 10 nations and was constructed as a
temporary venue in World Showcase at EPCOT.
Walt Disney World -
EPCOT
The Farm Bureau
Show – A team of Imagineers brainstormed an idea for
this new sponsor at Innoventions, a new products
showcase. We developed an interactive game show
combining a software digital interface with lo-tech
spinning pizzas and "fresh" plush ingredients!
Disneyland’s 50th
Birthday
Myself and a team
of Imagineers developed ideas for Disney’s 50th Birthday
Party, which will take place for 18 months beginning
05/05/2005. Some ideas I proposed were putting Birthday
hats on the five turrets of the Castle, each hat
representing one decade. I developed a live stage show
using 50 character themed presents and proposed
installing 50 character candles around the Castle, which
would “top” the cake.
Kelloggs
I was part of a
team which proposed ideas on how our Corporate sponsor,
Kelloggs, could be incorporated into the Disney Theme
Parks. The ideas ranged from interactive fountains to
entertaining Fun Foods to new consumer products.

Flic’s Fun Fair
I developed an
idea for a new land for children (ages 3 – 7) based on
the Disney/Pixar film, It’s Tough To Be A Bug’s Life. I
proposed ideas, made many concept models and drew
sketches for rides, water features, and environmental
elements. This project opened in October 2002 at
Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim.
Play with your
Food
‘Play with your
Food’ was an idea for a line of Food-based Consumer
Products which are entertaining but which also encourage
building social skills through team and group
interaction. Children have less and less opportunity to
play together as age compression pushes them onto
computers and other digital devices at increasingly
younger ages. Many social skills are developed from
playing together, including sharing, team-building and
leadership skills.
The Golden State
I was a Concept
Designer for "The Golden State" portion of Disney’s
California Adventure, a new Theme Park which opened in
2001 in Anaheim. We developed storylines for The
Workplace portion and worked with the following
California Corporations; Levi’s, Ghiradelli, See’s
Candies, Mission Foods, Mondavi, Hewlett Packard, Boudin,
and Caterpillar. I worked extensively on The Farm and
designed a venue called The Artisan’s Workplace
which featured California artists creating their Art in
front of the Guests.
GATEWAY
I was part of a
Concept team which worked on the Gateway project
proposed for Washington, DC. I drew sketches and made
concept models for this project which was a revival of
the Disney’s America Project. I worked extensively on
The Workplace area, where guests would see iconic
American products being manufactured. I was also
responsible for developing ideas for the The American
Farm area.
Disney’s Traveling
Show
I worked on a
proposed project called, Disney’s Traveling Show, which
was an idea inspired from the Barnum and Bailey
Traveling Circus. A caravan of Disney designed vehicles
would bring a Disney-themed show to cities throughout
America.
Cultural
Courtyard
World Showcase,
Walt Disney World - Cultural Courtyard was a "Soft
architectural" approach to showcase countries at World
Showcase in EPCOT. Instead of hard architecture, I
developed an architectural "Kit-of-Parts" for a
scaffolding system which could be constructed as 2-D or
3-D structures.
Lego Land World of
Wonders
Myself and another
Imagineer designed a LEGO-inspired land at World
Showcase in EPCOT at Walt Disney World in Orlando. I
drew plans, elevations and made a concept models for
this project. We proposed a boat tour, guest-driven
overhead ride system, and walking tour as part of this
land.

ARCHITECTURE
WALT DISNEY
IMAGINEERING
Tokyo Disney Seas (TDS)
I was one of three
Architecture & Facilities Engineering team members who
developed the conceptual site planning and
environmental design for this 2nd Gate adjacent to Tokyo
Disneyland. I developed and drew site plans, site
elevations, sections, and architectural elevations. I
also supervised a team that made two overall concept
models which were used to sell the project to the
Oriental Land Company and Disney’s Executive
Management.
Disney’s America
I was one of two
concept Environmental Designers for this new proposed
Theme Park 30 miles west of Washington, DC. I developed
site plans, overall site sketches, elevations, sections,
architectural renderings and concept models. I was also
responsible for The Workplace area which showcased the
production of American-made products like baseball
bats, tootsie rolls, footballs and Crayola crayons. I
focused on the Agricultural Workplace which told the
story of the contributions of the America Farmer.
Disney MGM
Studios/Europe
I was the lead
concept Landscape Architect and Environmental Designer
for this 2nd Gate adjacent to Disneyland Paris. Along
with a creative team of Architects and Environmental
Designers, I worked on the concept design, schematic
design, and design development of this proposed Theme
Park. I worked with a team of CADD designers and oversaw
implementation of the area development package into
construction documents. A large part of this effort was
collecting research and information on existing
Film-related Theme Parks in Europe. I was one of 10
team players who took a 3-month long research trip to
Europe where we researched film studios, theme parks,
museums and local attractions.
Disney/MGM Studios,
Walt Disney World, Orlando
My very first
assignment at Disney! I was the field Landscape
Architect for this 3rd major Theme Park at Walt Disney
World. I relocated to Orlando for a year and oversaw
installation of Area Development hardscape and
landscape. Imagineering teamed with Bechtel to construct
this film-inspired Theme Park which opened in the
Spring of 1989.
June 1984
- October 1987
POD, Inc. – Los
Angeles
POD was my first
job after I graduated from the University of Minnesota.
I worked as a Landscape Architect and Environmental
Designer and generated site designs for commercial,
retail, and residential projects. My primary
responsibility was to develop and draw designs from
concept through the design development phases. I also
assisted a lead Landscape Architect in Field
Installation of hardscape and landscape materials for
residential, commercial, and land planning projects.
